Advanced Lean / 6 Sigma Training

June 2010

Further Enhancing Quality While Improving Efficiency

Kennebec Technologies and the Maine Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) collaborate to expand on Kennebec's ongoing commitment to meeting and exceeding customer expectations for unsurpassed qualilty, value, and service.

Deepening Commitment to Customer Expectations by Expanding 6 Sigma and Lean Competencies

In late 2009, Kennebec Technologies partnered with Maine MEP in securing a grant to take Kennebec’s Lean practices to the next level — delivering shop-wide training in 6 Sigma/Variation Reduction and Problem Solving.

Harvey Smith, Vice President of Operations said, "We conducted this new level of Lean training to make sure our entire workforce is trained to the standards our customers expect. Our customers look for continuous process improvement and cost reduction, and we’re positioning ourselves to meet both those challenges through advanced training."

Training during April and May 2010 was applied to real-world cases from Kennebec’s past and present projects and included the following:

  • Value Stream Mapping
  • Spaghetti Diagramming
  • SIPOC (Supplier, Input, Process, Output, Customer)
  • Failure Mode Effect Analysis
  • Pareto Analysis
  • Flow Analysis
  • Control-Chart Analysis
  • DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control)
  • TIPS (Team Involvement Problem Solving)

Maine MEP trainer Bob Doiron congratulated the initiative, “Kennebec’s commitment to quality and training — especially in a difficult economy — is refreshing to see. This training keeps Kennebec ahead of the curve and prepares them to provide ongoing improvement at the shop floor level. With this work, Harvey and his team are positioning themselves to meet customer needs and expectations now and in the future.”
